Many things keep parents awake at night –
the day to day “chatter” in your heads, thoughts of tomorrow,
and perhaps the most disturbing thoughts of all - what will
happen when you are no longer able to take care of your son or
daughter who has a disability. The death of a parent can be an
emotional and practical tragedy in the life of a person who
has a disability.
Let’s face it; no one wants to have to
think about their own death. It seems so far away and remote.
It’s too easy to get wrapped up in today — who can plan for
the future? Adding to that, the task of planning for sons and
daughters who have a disability can be an especially
complicated and daunting one.
What more can parents hope for than to know
their child will be well looked after once they are gone.
Often day to day life is hard enough and parents don’t allow
themselves to think about the future- but a complete and
thorough estate plan is an absolute must in order to protect
their children.
Our job as parents is to prepare our
children for life. Our job as parents of children who have a
disability is also to prepare them for life after we are gone. |
